Since its introduction, this lens has been recognized worldwide for its exceptionally compact size and low weight, despite its high 7.1X zoom ratio.
Now Tamron has taken a further step forward in terms of performance with the introduction of the new version of the AF28-200mm. The new AF28-200mm F/3.8-5.6 LD Aspherical (IF) Super includes low dispersion glass for superb image quality and a dramatic reduction in minimum working distance (MOD) to 31.5' (80cm) across the entire range, without however changing the overall size and weight of the lens. The new AF28-200mm Super lens has the shortest MOD of any 28-200mm lens currently available and an expanded shooting distance range that greatly increases the versatility of the lens.
The MOD reduction was achieved by employing an internal focusing mechanism which required highly sophisticated construction to incorporate into a zoom lens of this type. This significant achievement sets a new standard in this type of zoom, virtually redefining the entire concept of "standard zoom" and allowing the lens to have almost unlimited practical application.
The use of internal focus also helps improve overall optical performance. In particular, the relative illumination in the close focus range was significantly increased and distortion was better compensated in the wide angle. To maintain the overall compactness and lightness, a completely new and further sophisticated design, called Integrated Focus Cam, has been developed. This allows the internal focus mechanism to integrate with the three-cam zoom design, achieving a reduction in MOD while maintaining compactness and lightness.
Combining the use of a hybrid aspherical element and LD (Low Dispersion) glass results in remarkable image representation. The use of hybrid aspherical elements allows the lens to achieve overall compactness and superior image quality, as well as reducing distortion across the field of view. LD glass helps provide razor-sharp image quality at telephoto, especially when shooting at close ranges.
A macro function is available with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8 at the minimum distance of 20.5' (52 cm) at the focal position of 135 mm.
Focus accuracy and AF response speed have been improved through the incorporation of a focus encoder that instantly transfers critical information to the camera body, including the amount of exposure level shift and /or aberrations with respect to the shooting distance.
The lens comes with a unique larger bayonet lens, shaped into a flower shape. This new lens maximizes the shading effect at every focal length setting. For greater handling and a firmer grip, a new rubber pattern has been designed for the focus ring. A distance scale has also been added to the focusing ring which, together with these two new features, makes focusing easier.
At the 200mm focal length, you can focus as close as 80cm (31.5'). Thanks to two hybrid aspherical elements and a large LD (Low Dispersion) element, the lens achieves exceptional image quality in a remarkably compact package. The lens is driven by the Integrated Focus Cam which optimizes the internal focusing mechanism. The system reduces the minimum focusing distance and increases optical performance. This extraordinary lens covers virtually any subject, including close-ups, thanks to its 1:4.8 magnification ratio.
