How to tell a new quilt from a true vintage / antique one:

When buying an antique quilt, buy from someone who knows what they are selling. Many quilts are hand quilted, even in today's market. One thing to watch for is the outside edge and how it was sewn. If the quilt has errors...yea, it's old. Look at the prints in the quilt, that is another telltale sign. One of the first books I bought to teach me about fabrics and era's was Dating Fabrics by Eileen Trestain. Another thing to watch for is solid color fabrics. If you don't know how to tell for sure, new from old, you might want to steer away from solid colors until you know what your buying, for sure, or...you are buying from a trusted seller. You can look up prints and quilts with google lens...so do that. I look at "antique or vintage quilts for sale" and so many of them are not old at all. Remember, hand quilted means nothing. What I mean by that is...quilts at Walmart are hand quilted, so hand quilted does not indicate that it is handmade. Hand stitched is another story entirely. Hand stitching is easy to see once you have seen it. Someone hand stitched a quilt, new or old, it's worth the price you paid. That's what I know....because I sew.

Let me share ebay rules for your education today. The word vintage can be placed on anything, there are no set rules for vintage. Antique however, must me old. If your unsure as to authenticity simply report the "antique" item to ebay and if it's still there 3 days later, it has passed ebay's experts....it is old, period.
