Two memorial scrolls as awarded to the families of French servicemen killed during the First World War. One by the French Government from 1916, the other by a nationwide patriotic organisation from 1919 onwards. All casualties were entitled to both and it is unusual to have both scrolls together. Large A3 size plus, with some fold marks and small scuffs and a small tear that will flatten out. Would look excellent if framed. These were the direct equivalent of the plaque and scroll awarded to British casualties' families.

Both named to the same soldier, a Corporal Bertaut of the 21st Infantry Regiment, who was killed in action at Deniecourt on the Somme on 15 September 1916  According to the unit history of the the regiment, available online and I can provide a link, this was when the 1st and 3rd battalions were consolidating their positions prior to attacking the German lines. I can provide some other details including a casualty listing and his service papers.

Comes with a boxed Medaille Miltiaire. This medal - and a Croix de Guerre - was awarded to all those who died.
