Pair Of Hand Carved Wooden African West African Dan Bird Masks

Hand carved bird masks made in Liberia or the Ivory Coast by the Dan tribe, or one of their near relatives, possibly Baga people.

Much of the mythology and social structure of the area is based upon the forest and its creatures. Initiates spend up to four months alone in the forest with masks before entering maturity.

The bird form is associated with benevolent spirits across several other African cultures including Baga people.

The beak is long and downward facing, and the face is decorated with geometric patterns.

Can be hung on wall.

Measure approx 15 and 16 inches in length.
