Here's a first American edition of Jules Verne's 'Dick Sands - or The Boy Captain' published by Scribners and dated 1879. Has 91 full page illustrations. A sprawling tale of an American whaling ship in the southern Pacific. After rescuing a group of African Americans trying to emigrate to Australia, a tragedy strikes, leaving young Dick Sands as the surviving crew member. Trying to sail his damaged ship to the coast of South America, sabotage sends them to the coast of Africa instead. There, the rag-tag group of survivors battle wild animals and unhappy natives as they try to reach civilization.


Condition is Very Good- with light rubbing to covers and edges and some splits to the spine ends. Spine is a little darkened. One signature loose and others pulled - not uncommon with this thick book. Christmas 1878 inscription on front free endpaper. Some creases and toning to back free endpaper.
