The GPSMAP 496 builds on the popularity of the GPSMAP 296 and GPSMAP 196 with its easy to use menu structures along with an enhanced display (9.65cm) 320 x 480 pixels, 256 colour sunlight readable TFT. We now add even more “high-end” software and features that will make this unit the next must have system for any pilot.
Use Exciting New European Features
We have added the long awaited VRP’s (Visual Reporting Points) to the system which can be searched and navigated to in two buttons presses. Obstacles have been added aswell which can be interrogated by moving the cursor over them to display their information. Private Airports and Heliports have also been included in the new European database. When an Atlantic database is now loaded onto the GPSMAP 496 (standard for Europe, Africa and Middle East) then the airspace setup menu changes from the US format to a European format. This will allow the customer to control airspace display requirements better than before in a format that they will recognize.

GPSMAP 496 features a built-in Jeppesen database. Using this information, the 496 displays your flight route over contour terrain mapping. The higher-resolution terrain database includes over ten times as much data as the 296's for even more visual reference. With information, the 496 monitors your current position in relation to surrounding terrain to provide alerts. Even customize your own minimum clearance levels to receive terrain cautions. The addition of private airports and heliports to the database provides even more navigation and emergency "nearest" options.

Garmin's GPSMAP 496 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty points of interest (POIs) database with motels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply enter a destination, and you're automatically routed with voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions. In addition, GPSMAP 496 accepts customized points of interest such as school zones and safety cameras and includes proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs. Add optional BlueChart g2 data cards, and turn the 496 into a color chartplotter.
