I search world wide for vintage Dior. It is my obsession. Pieces made in the 1950s, as this dress was, are few and far
between. Though the label says Christian Dior - New York, all Dior pieces of this era were manufactured in Paris or
London to be sold through high end distributors in New York. I have never heard of Hovland-Swanson; but that is where
this dress was displayed and sold.
Different from any Dior piece I have ever listed, it looks more simply constructed than other dresses of this time. Made
of gorgeous Charcoal color 100% Wool, there is a lot to take in. The neckline, both front and back, is actually darted with
seams somewhat like pie slices; this I have never seen before and it's quite lovely. There is a straight seam across the top
of the bust, there are no other darts in the sides; the dress is box cut with a fabulous belt, pom poms at the tie ends.
Please see photo 22 to see the sleeve detail. Dress is fully lined. I call this dress austere as it is perfect for a professional
work environment appearance. I realize I should have added a photo without the belt but I didn't; it is almost a straight cut
all the way down with an extra couple of inches at the hips. This dress can be worn by a few different sizes; the bust size can
accommodate up to 39" or a current size 12/14. 23" nylon zip up the back with 2 hook & eye at the nape. Please check the
measurements carefully. The dress is flawless.

By the way, if you have access to Apple+ streaming service, please do yourself a true gift and watch the 10 part series,
"The New Look." It starts during the World War 2 invasion of France, and though the clothing is jaw dropping, it is the true
history of not only Christian Dior (portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn, the amazing Australian actor, who captures the sadness
and spirit of the times) and his sister, Catherine (Maisie Williams, Arya in "Game of Thrones) a fervent member of the French
Resistance sent to prison camp. Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel...it touches on Pierre Balmain & Pierre Cardin but the story
is filled with history of which I had no idea. All 10 episodes have dropped; you can usually find an offer for a 7 day free trial.
