Here is a rare, vintage
“THE HUNTER’S FRIEND” TURKEY CALL. It
was made by Raymond C. Walker (“Pappy”) and one of his sons (Robert D.). Initially, the box calls were made of 100%
walnut. Later, they were changed to a
walnut lid and cherry sides. Some of
their calls are smooth-sided, while others are grooved-sided. I don’t know if one type is earlier than the
other. (THIS CALL IS AN ALL-WALNUT,
SMOOTH-SIDED CALL.) It is modelled after
M.L. Lynch’s call with smooth or ridged sides and angling inward towards the
base. Some of the calls have “Mfg. By.
R.C. Walker & Son, 323-E. Park. Ave., State College, Pa.” while others only
have the name and address. The call in
this auction has the name and address stamping.
NOTE: NO ZIP CODE, so it was made
prior to the mid 1960’s. The call is in
used condition. (Note: 3-pictures shown lacquer / finish imperfections in / on the call).
The duo started making
calls in the 1960’s at Raymond’s workshop at 323 E. Park Avenue, State College,
PA (Centre County). They made them 4 – 5 years, but
definitely stopped making them 4 years prior to Raymond’s death in 1977. My information source said they made well
less than 500 calls.
Pappy was a carpenter
for O.W. Houts & Son in State College, PA and Robert worked at Cerro,
Copper & Brass in Bellefonte, PA.
Raymond lived from July 1895 through March 1977, while Robert lived from
October 1917 through March 2000.
