Powder box made by Argilor of Paris in the 1920’s.

The roaring twenties, known in France as ‘Les années folles’, represented a period of artistic and social liberation after the devastating impact of World War one. The artists and writers of this period are well known and the same aspirations drove Parisian designers to create their own iconic imagery. Argilor's figures reflect the time perfectly, opulent, beautiful and seductive.

This piece reflects the time. An equisite beauty, the French equivalent of a 'flapper' poses with her hand on her shoulder and a demure expression. The box appears to be made from a hardwood burl, a solid block of hardwood carved and varnished on the outside to create the base. The natural grain of the wood contrasts with the aesthetic of the ceramic. It really is a beutiful piece.

it is in excellent condition for its age although there is a slight chip in the wood (see photo). A piece of the 1920s that is hard to find.
