For
your consideration is this Unique and Exquisite 19th century Stevens &
Williams Stourbridge Amethyst and Clear Art Glass Bowl with Threading and Clear
Glass Rigaree in Fitted Silver-Plated Stand and Preserve Spoon, c. 1880-1900.
Considered
a bon-bon or sweetmeat dish, this beautifully designed and decorated example of
Stevens & Williams threaded art glass is a great example of this type
English glass.
John
Northwood invented the threading machine at Stevens & Williams in 1880.
English
sweet meat dish swirl pattern in amethyst fading to clear glass with clear
applied rigaree. Ruffled upper edge. This gorgeous bride’s basket-shaped dish comes
complete with silver plate holder and hanging spoon.
The
technique of applying a thin layer of contrasting glass as decoration on an
item was originally created by Frederick Carder (of Steuben glass fame) when he
worked at Stevens & Williams in England prior to coming to the U.S.
A
charmer! Made in the Victorian era, totally on trend for an elegant touch to
today’s table, or a delightful display piece.
This
dish has an amethyst glass on top and clear body with threading, a lovely upper
scalloped rim and applied clear glass rigaree band around the body and it sits
in a fitted silver-plated metal stand which is featuring an amazing floral
ruffled design with twisted handle and three tall ball feet.
Ribs
create a wonderful visual display on both the interior and exterior of this
bowl. A deep, amethyst/purple color
accentuates the glass and beautifully frames the piece with ruffle edging.
This
piece is simply Amazing!
These
candy dishes were popular during the late Victorian Period (1880's). Much of
this type glass was produced by Stevens & Williams in England although it
is never signed.
The
silver-plate stand is marked "EPNS" and
the spoon is marked "Silverplate Made in England".
Approximate
Measurements: Stand - 7" high (to top of stand) and is 6 1/2" wide at
the widest part of the stand. The glass bowl/dish is 5" diameter at the
top, 3" high to top of amethyst glass and 3" at the bottom diameter. The
spoon is 4 1/2" long and 1 1/2" wide at the widest part.
This
Striking Set weighs 1 lbs. 6 oz.
The
dish is in excellent used antique condition with no chips, cracks or repairs
just a couple of minor fleabites in a thread area – they are not visible and don’t
take any from the beauty of the piece, just mentioned for 100% accuracy. The
stand has naturally aged patina commensurate with the age and light usage.
