1986-87 (2) Original Press Photos Race Horse Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup and Sold

Two original press photos of Lady's Secret. The first 1986 photo shows Lady's Secret the "The Iron Lady" with jockey Pat Day winning the 1986 Breeders' Cup Distaff at Santa Anita. Fran's Valentine was runner-up while finishing two lengths in front of third-place Outstandingly. Twilight Ridge, winner of the 1985 Juvenile Fillies, was sixth. Lady's Secret had front-running speed from the start. Her seven rivals were outmatched as she galloped clear by as much as five lengths before earning a 2½-length victory under Pat Day in a final clocking of 2:01 1/5 for the 1 ¼ miles.

The second original press photo is of Lady's Secret being sold to Fasif-Tipton Co. for $5.4 million at the November horse sale. That was the top price of the auction. She had returned to racing in 1987 but was not the same as she had been. Her problems were emotional rather than physical. In her last race at Saratoga in August she bolted in the direction of the stables. Lady's Secret was retired and then sold at the pictured auction as a potential broodmare.

Owned by Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Klein, Lady's Secret was a small grey filly by Secretariat out of the gray mare Great Lady M. She was trained by D Wayne Lucas and dominated races - defeating many of the best colts. During her championship season, the little gray filly started 15 times —all in graded stakes races--and won 10, including eight Grade 1 races, while never running out of the money. In all, she won 22 stakes. She retired as the top Oklahoma-bred in history with 10 Grade 1 victories on her record. She was a better racer than broodmare, but several of her daughters have had some success in the paddocks. Lady's Secret would produce 12 foals 6 colts and 6 fillies'.

In her career her race record was:
45 starts, 25 wins, 9 seconds, 3 thirds, and US$3,021,325. That was an earnings record for a filly. She retired with many honors: National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame (inducted in 1992). Saratoga Hoofprints Walk of Fame (inducted as part of the inaugural class in 2013) Arcadia Historical Society's Racing Walk of Champions (inducted as part of the inaugural class in 2014) Monmouth Park Hall of Champions Eclipse Award, American Horse of the Year (1986) Eclipse Award, American champion older female (1986) Both Eclipse Awards were rare for a filly. Blood Horse Magazine ranked her #76 in its top 100 US Racehorse list.
