On the cover of VanHalen's debut album in 1978, Eddie Van Halen holds up a Stratocaster-style guitar with black and white stripes, as if pointing to the future of guitars. This guitar became known as Eruption after he played the unprecedented and shocking guitar solo Eruption on this guitar. Eddie, who was 22 years old at the time, was a great musician and always wanted to improve the specifications and customize his equipment with innovative ideas. Eddie said before his death that these customizations were done out of necessity in order to maximize his potential. Refret on the neck, paraffin wax potting on the humbucker, simplified controls with only master volume using a knob labeled TONE, adoption of a 1958 Strat brass nut and tailpiece, black pickguard, and iconic stripes. The original guitar shows evidence of a wide variety of customizations, including the pattern.
