These specimens were originally business struck at San Francisco on Solid Base Metal Alloy Planchets. The "S" Mintmark can be found in relief in the field to the Left of Susan's image, just below the neck line. Each coin's obverse bears the bust of the iconic leader of the Women's Suffrage Movement, Susan B. Anthony. An eagle landing on the Moon with a distant earth in the foreground on the reverse represents one of the greatest triumphs of the United States of America over the course of its history.
These special 8.1 Gram, 26.5 mm Diameter Dollars were only minted for Four Years. The First Three of the striking years were consecutive and immediately followed the U.S. Bicentennial Celebration Period of 1971 -1978. Striking for the Fourth and Final year was suspended until 1999, when this became the last dollar coin series of the Second Millennium.
