This is a very unusual and on the large side, heavy, studio pottery ashtray. This is definitely hand made. I believe it is from the 1960s or 1970s.


I think this is slab construction because it is too oddly shaped to be wheel thrown.


The interior bottom of this piece has what looks like crystalized crackled glass pieces which gives it a very unique look. In researching this technique I found several examples where geodes were used when fired to achieve this look. I am not 100 percent positive that the bottom glass is from a geode, but it definitely has the look of that technique.


Good condition, there are two bare rough spots on the lip but they actually look like areas where the glaze didn't stick versus chips. This is a primitive piece do it's hard to tell.


This could also be used for keys, trinkets, a candle etc but I believe this was an ashtray.
