It was activated on 19 November 1969 at Duluth International Airport, Minnesota and was assigned two the First Air Force; it was reassigned to Air Defense Command 1 December 1969 and reassigned to the Tactical Air Command on 1 October 1979
The air division relocated to Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida on 15 April 1982; it was reassigned under the First Air Force on 6 December 1985 and was inactivated 1 July 1987
