Brand new in box Lake CX402 X Wide for sale. Note that these are the last and best evolution of the 402 on the stealthy triple black… They have the matt finish on the carbon tub chassis/sole, with black logos and the upgraded TWO-WAY BOA dials which allow micro adjustment in loosening and tightening unlike the previous version which had just the normal one-way BOAs.

These are brand new but were on display in store and have the have the odd minor cosmetic mark and a few marks in the carbon layup which is normal for these heat mouldable carbon tubbed shoes. They’ve never been worn, never been moulded etc.

I bought these for myself last year as a spare pair for my current 402-X’s which I absolutely adore, but it turns out I really won’t need them as mine show no signs of wear after 2.5 years constant use (bar deep winter). My existing perfectly fitting, heat moulded size 47s are THE BEST cycling shoes I’ve ever experienced… and believe me I’ve tried many!

These are the triple black colour way, a perfect match for any bike/brand and stay looking good longest! They also make your feet look smaller and sleeker which is a bonus in the larger sizes. The quality is just superb - kangaroo leather uppers, matt black carbon fibre chassis, 2-way micro tighten and micro loosen BOA dials (NOT the annoying ones that you can’t dial out a bit of tension and have to fully release to loosen a little!). My favourite luxury feature is the full leather lining (see last pic).

These are size 47 wide. See Lakes online guide to ensure you select the correct size for your foot as no returns. Lakes US/UK sizing numbers are NOT accurate but their mm measurements are.

A Lake 47 wide actually translates roughly to a Nike UK 11 Wide trainer when going by the 300mm measurement. The mm measurement is the most accurate comparison to other shoes.

Note that Lake Wide Fit shoes are proper wide fit shoes with a much wider carbon sole, not just some extra upper material that hangs over the edges of the sole like Sidi Mega, Shimano etc. Lake and Bont are the only proper, true wide fit specific cycling shoes with proper, wide, stable, supportive soles… they’re expensive but well worth it if you ride a lot and value your comfort and performance on the bike.

This 402 model is essentially identical to the latest 403 model (that costs £500) bar one piece of Carbitex reinforcement in the upper. A riding pal of mine actually sold his 403’s insisting that his old 402’s were more comfortable on longer rides as the full kangaroo upper let his feet expand and breathe better than the Carbitex reinforced upper on the 403’s. So there you go, these are really great shoes!

In order to get the best from these shoes you MUST use Lakes online guide to ensure you select the correct size for your foot. And then you need to heat mould them or go to a good bike shop that specialises in fitting a heat mouldable shoe… otherwise they won’t fit you right. If you get the right size and get them moulded (you can do it DIY but I’d recommend paying a pro to assist) then they are going to be the best cycling shoe you can get. Note that you can mould them as many times as you like/need.

The interior of the sole is luxuriously leather lined so you can actually run them WITHOUT the insoles to get a lower stack height. I’d definitely recommend moulding them and having an expert push up the carbon at the arch to give you extra arch support which is ESSENTIAL for cycling and part of what makes these shoes the best available.

You can then have a well supported and stable foot with absolutely minimal stack height. Or you can of course use them with the standard supplied Lake insoles, a custom orthotic or an aftermarket footbed like G8 or Specialized BG… The potential of these shoes is endless.

Important Notes:

If you've not had a pair of Lake CX402's before please note: These WILL NOT FIT PROPERLY UNTIL MOULDED (As per the Lake moulding instruction video on YouTube) as the heel is pinned in when they come out of the factory pushing the foot forward which makes them feel small at the toes and especially tight at the heel if you’re just “trying them on”.

Once they’re moulded, your foot will move back a few millimetres within the shoe and will feel perfect like the best fitting shoes you've ever worn.

You can then ride with them and even heat them again to iron out any tight or loose spots - tight spots can be eased by pushing out the heated carbon with the butt of a screwdriver handle, for loose spots you obviously just compress inward with your hands.

Arch support can also be increased by pushing the heated carbon upwards into your foot’s arch.

You have to be sure of your foot size. An experienced shop or bike fitter with the moulding oven for Lake/Bont/Shimano shoes will be able to do the process for you for a small charge. I’d really recommend doing that if you’re in any doubt; a good fitter will know where you need increased support too, really maximising the potential of these fantastic shoes.
