1910 Handwritten Diary~ Kate Blackman ~ Pitcher~Chenango New York.

This is the 1910 diary of Kate Blackman from the area of Pitcher, Chenango County, New York. She had lived with her husband, "B" (Burdette), and her young grandson Carrol, who was about sixteen years old at this time. Carrol's mother (Kate's daughter) died just a few days after giving birth to him due to something that caused a lot of pain in her throat. I think it might have been diptheria, but they never said. Three doctors did surgery on her together, but they still couldn't save her. It was very sad because she was only 25 years old, and Carrol had a very low birth weight, but thank goodness with Kate's help, he did survive. I believe she was Kate's and B's only child as well, which makes it even sadder. At this time, his father, Ed, has remarried to a lady who is also named Kate and he and his family have moved to Pitcher to live and and work, because Carrol's grandfather B has died. Kate was about 70 years old when she wrote this diary and talked about the work done on the farm, about going to church more often and trying to live for he who died on the cross for her, getting baptized and going to the Ladies aid meetings and a picnic. She mentions spending time gardening, canning, and pickling different fruits and vegetables, helping Kate tie a quilt, and making Carrol a night dress. She mentions several deaths, and that sixteen years ago, on July 5th, Carrol's mother died, staying all night with Julliette, who was very low, going to an old ladies quilting, and much more! Kate died in 1914 at the age of 74, and B was about 73. The diary's pages are yellowed with age, and there is a page torn in the back. It is written in pencil and  is not in the best condition, but what you might expect with one this old. Please see the photos for a better idea of the condition. The diary has about 334 days  with an entry. This is a very interesting little piece of Pitcher New York history. Any questions, please feel free to ask me anytime, and thank you so much for taking the time to look! It really is much appreciated!!
