Photograph Notes: At first sight this appears to be an example of mindless graffiti disfiguring the grade II* listed 18th century obelisk on Wychbury Hill. But it is a curious question for a vandal to pose and the story behind it is intriguing. 'Bella' was the name given to the victim of a grisly murder accidentally discovered by three boys in Hagley Wood in 1943. The body of a woman believed to have been in her thirties had been hidden inside the hollow trunk of an elm tree; one hand had been severed and was found a short distance away. Police determined that she had been dead for about 18 months. To this day she has never been identified and her killer was never brought to justice.
