Design

The design of the bill illustrates the Andean Condor.

Andean condor

The largest flying bird in the world, owner of a majestic flight. Its scientific name is Vultur gryphus.

It plays an important role at an environmental level, since it consumes animal remains, contributing to the circulation of matter within ecosystems.

Its open wings measure more than three meters, a unique quality to take advantage of air currents. It can rise to seven thousand meters, although this does not make the species safe, it is in the vulnerable category in Argentina, according to Resolution 348/210 of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of the Nation.

The Andean Condor Conservation Program, organized by Ecoparque BA and Bioandina Foundation, is carried out within the framework of the Binational Andean Condor Conservation Program of Chile and Argentina, ALPZA PC # 02 Certified as a leading conservation program in Latin America and WAZA Conservation Project # 10027. Consolidated as a model project worldwide, it rescues condors in danger through SOS Cóndor. Captive condors become breeders and custodians of their young so that they can return to freedom.

Obverse

The main motifs are printed in intaglio and the backgrounds in Offset.

The portrait of the Andean Condor is reproduced with ornamental flowers, accompanied by the text “ANDEAN CONDOR”. On the right it reads “BANCO CENTRAL DE LA REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA”.

The security background represents a mountainous natural environment in the lower sector of the obverse. In the upper sector: sky and representations of Andean condor footprints in multiple directions, as a symbol of plurality, and ornamental flowers on both edges.

In the upper left corner, the letter “L” expresses the value of the bill in Roman numerals and in the right, the silhouette of the animal.

Reverse

It is printed in Offset.

The main motif is an artistic recreation of Cerro Aconcagua, habitat of the Andean condor. Between the landscape and the bicontinental map of the Argentine Republic, the distribution map of the Andean condor is located.

On the upper side edges, a set of condors is completed by joining the ends of the bill.

The silhouettes of the footprints distributed on the background in different directions continue the concept of plurality of the obverse.

In the lower left corner, a representation of the Andean condor as an element dedicated to children.

Nominations and awards

This banknote was nominated in 2019 by the International Banknote Society (IBNS) for the “Banknote of the Year” award among more than 150 pieces from around the world issued in 2018. This nomination is the third consecutively received by this family of banknotes. by the IBNS.

Although Canada's $10 bill won, the nomination for the bill illustrated with the image of the Andean Condor means recognition of the work carried out in its design and production.
