**This bowl was probably handcrafted no more than 10 years ago.  It's a modern take on the incantation bowl used widely in the Middle East from the 6th and 8th centuries as a protection against malign spirits.  The incised characters filling the interior of this bowl says, repeated 108 times,  "Om Shri Ramaya Namaha," a mantra, or sacred utterance used to honor Lord Rama, a god and incarnation of Vishnu.  The writing is devanagari script in Sanskrit (the sacred language of Hinduism).  Sanskrit today is one of the official languages of India, although its origins are from the area known in modern times as Syria.
