Writeup | Writeup from MB 110: Northwest Africa 14147 (NWA 14147) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Nov Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3-4) History: Purchased by John Higgins in November 2021 from a dealer in Ouarzazate, Morocco. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Breccia composed of discrete unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 500 ± 250 µm, N = 25) plus Type 3 and Type 4 chondrite lithic clasts, mineral grains and a large (2 cm) melt rock clast, all set in a fine grained matrix (20 vol.% , pale orange in thin section). Accessory phases in all components are pyrrhotite, pentlandite and sodic plagioclase. The fine grained melt rock clast consists of strongly-zoned euhedral olivine grains (mean grainsize ~50 µm) accompanied by chromite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite and interstitial glass. Geochemistry: Olivine in unequilibrated chondrules (Fa33.8±16.0, range Fa13.8-56.4, N = 6), olivine in melt rock clast (core Fa20.6, rim Fa 62.7; N = 2), olivine in matrix (Fa41.0±0.6, range Fa40.5-41.4, N = 2), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs19.8±9.3Wo1.6±1.7, range Fs10.7-27.9Wo0.4-4.0, N = 4), augite (Fs21.7Wo38.6). Classification: R3-4 chondrite breccia with melt-rock clasts. The unusual melt-rock clasts in this specimen resemble those described in DaG 013, PCA 91241 and LAP 031275 by Lunning et al. (2018). Specimens: 51 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. J. Higgins. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
