GOOD TO KNOW

Star Notes

The term "Star Note" commonly refers to Replacement Notes. These are notes that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) uses to replace misprinted and damaged currency before it gets released into circulation. Modern replacement notes look exactly like normal paper money, except that there is a star printed at the end of the serial number rather than a letter. Older types of paper money like Gold Certificates, Silver Certificate, and Legal Tender notes the star was printed at the beginning of the serial number.

Print Runs

Star Notes are printed in what are called "runs." For the current printing techniques used by the BEP, the maximum run size for Star Notes is 3,200,000 notes (100,000 32-note sheets). Sometimes a lower quantity of Star notes are needed, in which case fewer are printed. Common run sizes are 320,000, 640,000, 1,280,000, and 2,560,000 but there are others.

If a less-than-full run of Star Notes is printed, the next run will start at the next closest multiple of 3.2 million.

For example: a printing of 1,280,000 followed by 640,000 followed by 3,200,000 would use these serial numbers:

  • Run 1: X 0000 0001 * - X 0128 0000 *
  • Run 2: X 0320 0001 * - X 0384 0000 *
  • Run 3: X 0640 0001 * - X 0960 0000 *

Star Note Rarity

Star Notes get their rarity from the quantity printed and released into circulation. Some collectors put together sets of Star Notes broken down by each print run. Other collectors put together sets of Star Notes broken down by the Federal Reserve Bank (FRB) - indicated by the first letter of the Serial Number.

Due to different collecting goals, there is debate whether Star Note print run size or the total quantity printed per FRB is more important for determining value.

Collectors generally consider Star Notes from print runs of 640,000 notes or fewer to be rare enough to be worth more than face value. Condition is extremely important to value for modern notes.

Two Types Of Star Notes

There are two types of Star Notes - Sheet Notes and Regular Notes.  The difference is when in the printing process they are used.  The print type has a large impact on whether a Star Note is rare or not.  Read more about the two types here: Two Types of Star Notes: Sheet Notes vs Regular Notes.

Types Of Fancy Serial Numbers

Here is a list of commonly collected fancy serial numbers.

Serial Number 1 through 9

Very simply these are the lowest of the low serials, and are the first numbers printed in any run: meaning 00000001 - 00000009. These notes are exceedingly rare.

Low Serial Numbers

Serial numbers that start with four or more zeros are fancy: meaning 00000100 - 00009999.  The more leading zeros, the better.

High Serial Numbers

Serial numbers that start with four or more nines are fancy: meaning 99990000 - 99999999.  The higher, the better.  All notes are printed starting with serial number 1, but recently notes have NOT been printed to 99999999.  Notes printed on sheets of 32 and 50 within the past few decades (uncut sheets excluded) are only printed to 96000000.  Prior to that, block letters have rolled over at various increments - 99200000, 99840000, and 99999999. This means that these super high serial numbers also tend to be older notes, which will skew their value higher.

For a recent note that has a block rollover at 96000000, you might think "that means 95999173 is rare because it's within 827 of the highest number, similar to five leading zeros."  Maybe a collector might find it interesting to pay over face value for, but I think it would be considerably lower than a five leading zero number.

Stand Alone

A stand alone serial number contains one digit that is preceded and followed by all zeros. For example, 04000000 or 00008000.

Multi Millionaire / Trailing Zeros

Multi Millionaire serial number contains a single digit number (1-9) that is followed by 7 zeros. For example, 10000000 thru 90000000. These numbers are very rare. Trailing zeros serial numbers that start with a 9 are more rare. This is because some currency blocks do not reach 90 million. So therefore, a serial number such as 90000000 will be more rare than a serial number such as 10000000.

Ladders
Each digit is one number higher or lower than the previous digit. Examples: 01234567, 98765432. Some people consider ladders fancy if they go up and down like: 23456765, or wrap around from zero: 56789012. Their rarity is likely why the definition of a ladder serial number was expanded to include other, more common types.
True Ladder

A true ladder serial number contains the ascending digits 1-8. It's the number 12345678. These serial numbers are incredibly rare.

Reverse Ladder

A reverse ladder serial number, also known as a stepdown or backwards ladder, contains the descending digits 8-1. It's the number 87654321. These serial numbers are incredibly rare.

Broken Ladder

A broken ladder serial number contains ascending digits, but not the digits 1-8. The digits will appear "broken" with the number 0 before, after, or in-between the other digits. Examples include: 01203004 and 40506078. Broken ladder serial number bills are moderately rare.

8 Digit Broken Ladder / Scrambled Ladder

Binary Radar

The radar only consists of two digits. Examples: 83833838

Radar-Repeater-Rotator

Some people try to collect numbers matching their birthdays or other life milestones.

Year Note

Serial numbers can contain years like 19749776 or 92282023 Some people try to collect numbers matching their birthday year or other life milestones.

Liar's Poker

A poker note is a note that has 5 or more of the same digit. This category is based on the bar game played with 1s, and thus is only ever found on a 1 dollar U.S. bill, named ?liar?s poker.? It is a game in which players make a bet on who will have the highest occurring number out of all the possible 10 digits found on a note ? 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,or 9. Examples of poker notes include 01111124, 33463338, etc. Five (or more) 7?s in a row being the most desirable, for example, 1237 7777.

Devil?s Note

Devil?s notes are a note with ?666? in the serial.

Gas Pump Notes

Notes named after the old time gas pumps that had rotating numbers. This is a circumstance in which the serial, when printed, has a number that is significantly higher than the other numbers. Often this can occur in 1- 3 of the numbers in the serial.

Consecutive / Sequence

These are notes that are valuable for some other reason ? a fancy serial perhaps, or an older note. Consecutives are notes that are found in sequence for example, 23452335, 23452336, 23452337 are all in sequence.

Super Pedigrees
This is when the serial number prefix makes the complete serial something different ? something super. Any of the above pedigrees can qualify for the ?super? addition excluding Million Serial Number. The only requirement is that the prefix adds to the original serial number. There are two different scenarios where super fancy pedigrees come into play:
  1. The serial number is already fancy and the prefix adds to the pedigree making it super.
  2. The serial number isn?t fancy at all until the prefix is added ? most commonly seen with radar serial numbers.
Condition

Uncirculated: A note that has not been used in circulation, but may have minor imperfections, such as a slightly off-center design or light handling.

Choice About Uncirculated: A note with light circulation but still remain its paper crispiness. It may have minor imperfections, such as only one light fold.

About Uncirculated: A note with moderate circulation, but still retains a clear design. It may have more signs of circulation. Usually a destination for the note with two hard vertical folds.

Choice Extremely Fine: A note with a sharp design, but with more signs of circulation than the About Uncirculated. Usually a destination for the note with three hard vertical folds or one fold for vertical and horizon on each side.

Extremely Fine: A typical note arrived at this condition will have three to four heavy folds one of them can be a horizon fold with minimal wear and excellent eye appeal.

Choice Very Fine: A note with a clear design, but with more significant signs of circulation, there might be greater than 4 and less than 7 folds or wrinkles but still retain its crispness.

Very Fine: A note with a clear design, but with even more significant signs of circulation, such as heavy creases or folds. There might be from 7 up to 10 folds.
