John Wilkinson's (Warwickshire) copper
halfpenny token dated 1792.
Obverse: Bust of John Wilkinson with legend:
“IOHN WILKISON IRON MASTER.”. Reverse: Vulcan seated hammering on anvil
behind which is a ship with legend: “HALFPENNY. 1792”. Edge inscription:
“PAYABLE AT ANGLESEA LONDON OR BRISTOL.”.
The Wilkinson Series was wrongly
attributed by Dalton & Hamer to Warwickshire and should have been
included in the Shropshire section. John Wilkinson was one of the
leading iron masters at the end of the eighteenth century and, more
importantly for collectors of Conder tokens, the second person to
commence their issue. Nice collectable condition, see photograph. D&H Lothian No: 555c. Diameter 28.8mm.
Listed in Dalton & Hamer as: “SCARCE” |
