  • Schanker was known for his unorthodox and creative approach to color woodcuts. He printed with oil-based inks, often layering multiple colors before the previous ones had dried, resulting in unique monoprints.
  • Louis Schanker’s artistic journey was unconventional—he quit school as a teenager, joined the circus, worked in wheat fields, and rode the rails. Later, he studied art in New York and spent time in Paris.
  • Schanker was a muralist, graphic arts supervisor for the WPA (Works Progress Administration), and a founding member of The Ten, an influential artist group.
  • His work evolved from natural forms, even though it’s often classified as abstract. He had great respect for nature’s shapes and expressed himself in relation to those forms.
  • Schanker taught art, first at the New School for Social Research and later at Bard College.
  • This artwork exemplifies his innovative use of color and expressive techniques.

Louis Schanker was a Contemporary of Mark Rothko (aka, Marcus Rothkowitz), at Arts Students League in New York City in the 1920's.
In 1935 Schanker and others (Ilya BolotowskyBen-ZionMark Rothko, Adolph GottliebJoseph Solman, Tschacbasov, Lou Harris, and Ralph Rosenborg) formed a group called "The Ten" to protest The NY Whitney Museum's lack of support for American Abstract Artists and preference for traditional European representational styles.
