We are delighted to offer this exceptionally fine and decorative Victorian solid silver card case with marks for Nathaniel Mills of Birmingham 1839.

Renowned as the pre-eminent box/case maker of the 19th century, it is of no surprise that this card case by Mills presents some of the finest and exemplary features to be desired on such pieces.

The overall shape features an elegant cartouche-like form with scrolled edges forming a perfectly symmetrical shape.
What is particularly delightful is the incredibly detailed engine-turned and hand-engraved motif on both sides of the case featuring a plethora of foliate motifs.

The edges are embellished with volute acanthus scrolls which are all hand engraved and meticulously designed in a way that in spite of the asymmetrical and fluid curves, it forms a well-proportioned border.

A cartouche is present in the centre on both sides with further elaborate scrolled engravings. On one side, a beautiful scene of a swan resting under a tree can be found and the other face reveals further foliate motifs with two pheasants.

Imagining all the time, effort and craftsmanship that would have gone into making one single card case of this calibre is certainly very impressive. One can envision how challenging it would be to simply draw such a design on paper, let alone engrave on silver, without a single mistake nor slip of the hand which would have resulted in the item having to be melted down again.

Understandably, its aesthetic beauty and magnificent craftsmanship would divert attention away from its use and practicality, however, we believe such a versatile and sleek style of these cases allows for multiple contemporary uses whether be it for carrying business cards, credit cards or some cash.

A practical yet exquisite accessory for the distinguished individual and unlike anything else today - an inevitable conversation starter and a refined manner of expressing your passion for fine antiques.

The case is hallmarked with full English marks on the inner bezel where it opens.
