Charles Frederick Slinn. 1905 - 1987.

Note: From the Sheffield daily Telegraph December 1st 1931. "Work leads to Theft Charge. A piece of amateur detective work was disclosed at Sheffield Police Court yesterday, when Charles Frederick Slinn (26) of 29 Fretson Road, was charged with stealing a stove and lamp, valued at 18s 7d belonging to allotment holder..."

29 Fretson Road still exists, postcode S2 1JW, Slinn is not on the 1939 Register.

Condition: Used, issued. A few edge knocks and scrapes. Children have been playing with this. Given to a competent silversmith you could take the sting out of it and the medal should tidy up fine. The naming details are visible. The pictures refer.

Impressed named: 865932 GNR C F SLINN R. A.

Gunner Charles Frederick Slinn. Royal Artillery.

Awarded: Authority: A.O. 134/46 List Number: 4 Authority Date: 1946

Source: Forces War Records. The 1946 issue of this TEM covers Slinn for his WW2 service, issued for 12 years service, war service counted double which means Slinn was already in the Territorial Force at the outbreak of WW2 in September 1919 which is why he received his medal in 1946.

The Efficiency Medal, (EM) was instituted on 17 October 1930 and replaced several former long service awards including the Volunteer Long Service Medal, the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Medal, the Militia and Special Reserve Long Service Medals and the Territorial Efficiency Medal. Specifically it replaced the ‘Territorial Efficiency Medal’ of 1921 and was awarded for 12 years efficient service. Clasps were added for each additional 6 years service. WW2 service counted as accelerated qualification and was doubled toward qualification. The EM was awarded to warrant officers, NCOs and men of the volunteer Military Forces throughout the Commonwealth.
