ITEM DETAILS
This unit is part of the gear remaining from our late friend, a highly experienced electrical engineer and lifelong ham. His goal was to find unbuilt examples of the equipment he'd previously owned over his years of ham radio activity, and replicate the ham station he'd had during the various phases of his ham radio life. He would then build the kits for fun and put them into service. This unit was part of his ham radio field day gear, and he used it regularly until late last year when he unexpectedly passed away.
Note that this unit is intended for use in ham radio or other communication media, and is used to test transmitter/antenna matching. It looks brand new, although it must have seen at least annual use at Field Day.
Here are the specs, found online:
MFJ-249 HF/VHF SWR Analyzer
The MFJ-249 combines four basic circuits: a wide range oscillator, a frequency counter, a 50 Ω RF bridge and a calibrated bridge unbalance indicator. This combination of circuits allows measurement of the SWR (referenced to 50 Ω) of any load connected to the ANTENNA connector. The FREQUENCY switch selects the following frequency ranges:
1.8 - 4 MHz, 4 - 10 MHz, 10 - 26.2 MHz, 26.2 - 62.5 MHz, 62.5 - 113 MHz, 113 - 170 MHz.
The MFJ-249 can be used to adjust or measure the following:
Antennas: SWR, resonant frequency, bandwitdth, efficiency
Antenna tuners: SWR, frequency
Amplifiers: Input and output networks
Coaxial transmission lines: SWR, velocity factor, losses, resonance
Balanced transmission lines: Impedance, velocity factor, resonence
Matching or tuning stubs: SWR, resonant frequency, bandwidth
Traps: Resonant frequency
Tuned circuits: Resonant frequency
Small capacitor: Value
RF chokes and inductors: Self resonance, series resonance, value
Transmitters and oscillators: Frequency
BACKGROUND
I have the unfortunate duty of liquidating the radio estate of my recently-deceased lifelong friend. He was a ham radio operator ever since childhood, and was extremely fond of Heathkits. He worked his way through college as an electronics assembler in the golden years of Silicon Valley, where he learned to solder expertly as well as acquire the other skills needed to properly assemble and align electronic equipment, before embarking on a long career as an electrical engineer.
He never lost his love of Heathkits. In his later years he found unbuilt kits for much of the same gear he had built and used over 50 years of being a radio amateur, then assembled them and put them into operation, as a way of recapturing the fun hobby times of his youth.
When he passed away unexpectedly, he thus left behind a group of several complete and meticulously assembled and maintained fully operational ham stations, a good selection of other Heath products such as test gear, as well as a considerable number of new-old-stock unbuilt Heathkits.
Here are lists of the Heath gear we have been offering, both built and unbuilt.
UNBUILT
Unbuilt kits are as found, typically in original boxes that have been opened but otherwise undisturbed. These kits are not guaranteed as to completeness or the condition of the components.

BUILT (OPERATIONAL)
Most of the built kits were assembled in recent years, and all vintage components were tested and replaced as needed prior to building each kit. Additionally, he had gone through almost all equipment not assembled in recent years to find and replace drifted or aged components. All gear was thus well-maintained, and was in regular use until the Fall of 2023.
