On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique map "Darby Shire". A very attractive and detailed early 17th Century map of Derbyshire.  Offered with hand colouring.   

DATE PRINTED: c.1650 from a plate first issued in 1599. This map was engraved by Peter Keer and published in 1599. It was re-issued from 1617 with the updated plate number (33) and then in various further issues to 1676.  

SIZE: The printed area is approximately 13 x 9 cm (5 x 3.5 inches), plus good margins.

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Published in Humble's 'England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland Described and Abridged... from a Farr Larger Volume Done by John Speed (London: G. Humble, 1627-1632).' A set of miniature maps, engraved by Pieter van den Keere, based mainly on Christopher Saxton. They are believed to have been first issued between c. 1605–10 in Amsterdam. They were reprinted in 1627 by George Humble, the publisher of the 1610 atlas by John Speed. To capitalise on the value of Speed's name, the collection was retitled as above, and came to be known as the Miniature Speed. The only relation to the Speed maps is that the text used in the Speed atlas was also used in the Keere atlas.  

TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on laid paper. 

VERSO: There is text printed on the reverse side, which describes the county. 

CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian paper is subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated. I offer a no questions asked return policy.
