On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique road map showing the road from St Davids to Holywell in Wales. The road map is over 2 pages printed back to back being sheets 73 and 74. Both are hand coloured.
DATE PRINTED: 1775, dated on the print.
SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 21 x 16.5 cm, 8.25 x 6.5 inches (medium) plus margins.
PROVENANCE: An antique map published in Thomas Jefferys's "Jefferys's Itinerary; or Travellers Companion, Through England, Wales, and Part of Scotland, Containing All the Direct and Principal Cross Roads; with the Addition of every New Road. Carefully collected from all the actual Surveys hitherto published. Improved with many thousand names of places more than are in any similar publication. To which are added Copious Indexes to all the Roads and Places mentioned in the work, with their exact Distance from London. London, Printed for R. Sayer and J. Bennett, Map and Print Sellers, No.53, Fleet-Street. MDCCLXXV". This was a partnership of Robert Sayer (ca. 1724-1794) and John Bennett (active 1760-d.1787), which lasted between 1774 and 1783. Bennett had been Sayer’s apprentice. In 1783 Bennett lost control of his mental faculties and the partnership dissolved as a result. Sayer’s business was later passed to his employees, Robert Laurie and James Whittle.
