Four items brought from the front in WW2 to please girlfriends or sisters. The sweetheart brooch bears the photos of two young men, both in uniform. Made in green Bakelite ( early plastic ). The pin is intact. A colourful patriotic hanky , a small diary from Italy and a pair of saucy green garters complete the gifts. The 1945 diary is unused, has a velvet cover and measures just 6 by 8 cms.. The silk hanky is 26 cms square and bears four Union Jacks with the dragon rampant in the middle. England, Ireland , Wales and Scotland are represented at the edges. The most rare gift are the garters. I know of only one other pair that survived and these were sold in a London auction many years ago. These are pale green ruched silk and possibly bore bows at one time. To me , they scream of Paris and would have delighted a lady in war torn Britain !
