IRELAND 15 Euro 2017 'Jonathan Swift - Gulliver’s Travels'
| |
This 2017 €15 silver proof coin pays tribute to the life of one of
Ireland’s most popular authors, Jonathan Swift. The new collector coin
has been launched to mark the 350th anniversary of Swift’s birth in
1667.
Educated at Trinity College and later appointed Dean of St. Patrick’s
Cathedral in Dublin, Swift is regarded as one of the foremost prose
satirists in the English language. The author is best known as the
writer of A Tale of a Tub, A Modest Proposal and of course Gulliver’s
Travels, Swift’s single greatest work. The book recounts the voyages of
Lemuel Gulliver to four exotic lands where he encounters a series of
ironic illustrations of humanity. However, the work can be more
accurately described as an incisive critique on the imperfections of
human nature. Swift died in Dublin in 1745 and his remains are interred
at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
The commemorative coin was designed by Polish designer Sebastian
Mikolajczak, and aptly features the character of Jonathan Swift’s best
known work as a Lilliputian ship sails across the open pages of
Gulliver’s Travels.
