I used to have many foreign coins but sold most – I reserved
some that seemed more interesting, in this case I found the 1937 1 Fen/Brass
Shi Kwan Cent and the 1920 10 Cash interesting, but I no longer collect foreign
coins. I'm not sure what I have, I’ve
researched using Numista and using the internet for help with Chinese numbers
and Numista which unfortunately doesn't have all varieties, and I’m prone to
misidentifying – perhaps you know better?
Please See the photos and feel free to check out Numista or any other
source, and feel free to let me know further information to incorporate into
this. I'm trying to depict as accurately
as possible.
- 1937 1 Fen (Brass Shi Kwan Cent)
Although it looks reddish and coppery, it is brass. The coin is in great shape. Per a Chinese number translator, 六十二
means 26, referring to the 26th Year of the Republic, and per Numista this coin
was minted from 25 to 28 corresponding with 1936-1939, thus 26 roughly
corresponds with the second year this coin was issued, in about 1937 (different
calendar means that it overlaps with either 1936 or 1938, i don't know which)
2nd Series
Obverse: Sun with Chinese ideograms above and surrounded by a decorative
boarder.
Lettering: 年六十二國民華中
- Translation: Year 26 of the Republic of China
Reverse: Ancient Chinese spade money with one Chinese ideogram on either side
and surrounded by a decorative border.
Lettering: 分壹,
貝齊:
Translation: 1 Fen, Qi Bei
Comments: The spade represented is an issue of the State of Han issue during
the Warring States period, cast circa 350-250 BC. - 10 Cash – although I had identified this as a 1912
coin, I think it is what Numista depicts as 1920, 6th issue; Founding of the
Republic; star incuse; copper.
Obverse: Crossed flags of the Republic of China (with incuse star, how I
identified it) and its army with Chinese ideograms above and below.
Lettering: 國民華中,
幣念紀國開; Translation: Republic of China, Founding commemorative coin
Reverse: Two Chinese ideograms above floral and wheat, all surrounded by
English legend.
- 1942 1/2 Yuan
1 / 2 Yuan: Copper-nickel, for years 30-32 of the Republic, corresponding with
1941-1943, and this coin is year 31, thus 1942 (and overlapping 1941 or 1943
because we have different calendars)
6th Series
Obverse: Bust of Sun Yat-sen facing left with Chinese ideograms above and
surrounded by a decorative border.
Lettering: 年一十三國民華中
- Translation: Year 31 of the Republic of China
Reverse: Ancient Chinese spade money with one Chinese ideogram on either side
and surrounded by a decorative border.
Lettering: 圓半,
貝齊
- Translation: 1/2 Yuan, Qi Bei
- 1954 – Five Jiao
- 1941 10 Fen
- 1936 5 Fen
- 1940 5 Fen
- 1955 – 1 Jiao (two of these)
