Adolph A. Weinman commemorative from Tuvalu
The designers of America’s coins were sculptors, medal designers, and
artists who were either hired by or commissioned by the Mint to create
images of the ideals of a nation, but were very under recognized, in
that they were scarcely commemorated with images of their likeness. To
an effect, this series of coins designed by ModernCoinMart (MCM) staff
artist Charles D. Daughtrey is art of the artists!
This is the second 1 oz .999 fine silver coin in a series minted by
the Perth Mint of Australia that pays fitting tribute to an artist who
designed some of America's most memorable coins - Adolph Alexander
Weinman. It was minted for initial release during the 2015 ANA World’s
Fair of Money in Chicago, Illinois.
Adolph Alexander Weinman – Coin Designer
Mr. Weinman was commissioned to work with other artists he knew, such
as Augustus Saint-Gaudens and James Earle Fraser, as a part of the
so-called "Renaissance of American Coinage" that occurred between 1907
and 1916. By order of President Theodore Roosevelt, most of the designs
of US circulating coins were changed to have a more distinctly American
appeal, with elegant representations of Americana of the time period. In
this period nearly every coin design was dramatically changed, two of
which - the Mercury dime and the Walking Liberty half dollar - were
designed by Mr. Weinman.
The design of this coin portrays Mr. Weinman in a three-quarter front
view on the left side of the design. To the right of his portrait is
one of his most famous designs, that of the Walking Liberty half dollar,
is craftily placed behind his head in a "glass bead" semi-frosted
finish to contrast with the heavy frost on the effigy. The logo of the
ANA (American Numismatic Association) is placed in the design on his
left shoulder. The ANA was instrumental in their assistance with the
planning and promotion of this coin's issue.
