After collecting vintage sterling silver jewellery for almost forty years, I have reached the conclusion that English silver jewellery is the most beautiful, and made by the most skilled and well trained silversmiths. Part of the reason for that of course is that the making of the finest quality silver jewellery has been a very old and respected profession for many hundreds of years, with many laws made to protect authenticity and purity. The guilds were developed to protect the integrity of the profession and long apprenticeships were the basis of a lifetime of skill development. The hallmarking system for English silver gives a substantial amount of information in a series of tiny stamps, which include the name of the maker, the purity of the metal, the place it was made, and the date it was made. Harsh penalties existed for inaccurate hallmarks.

This beautiful old ring carries this set of hallmarks, which establish the piece as made in Birmingham, the centre of fine silver in England. The design of the ring is antique and beautifully executed, with deeply engraved patterns on the shoulders and the front of the ring. The three quite large blood red garnets are set well down into the silver and well protected by multiple claws. There are four tiny little white stones also set well down, All stones show some rubbing. The ring remains in very good condition, with little loss of silver, and with numerous wear marks around the back of the band.

The size of the ring is 6.5 (US sizing) or M (English sizing)
