This is a precise replica of the original X-Files alien stiletto gimlet. Known as the "ice pick" on set, the original prop was an out-the-front style stiletto used to dispatch aliens by stabbing them in the back of the neck. The gimlet appears in a half-dozen X-Files episodes in seasons two through six. I've attached screenshots of every appearance the gimlet makes throughout the series.

The original prop was a complicated device, and required a pneumatic tube run up the actors sleeve in order to actuate. Pressure from the tube caused the gimlet needle to project. In some episodes, you could even see the needle extend out the end even when the actor didn't have his thumb on the button.

This is my own design, based closely on one of the screen-used originals that went to public auction after the X-Files series end. This is accurate in length, width and diameter to within 1 mm of the original.

In order to make this compliant with both eBay and Comic Con rules, which forbid automatic knives and metal, mine uses powerful neodymium magnets, is gravity fed, and made of Prusament, a higher-end material from the Czech Republic. It is finished in a micro-thin layer of rock-hard museum coating, which increases the patina of the Prusament and gives it a satisfying grip that doesn't feel like plastic. The internal mechanism is lubricated with machine-grade oil, which is fully encased in the gimlet.

The interior is lined with 8 neodymium magnets throughout the length. They are positioned inside in such a way that they set up a magnetic field which holds the gimlet spike in or out. The spike will stay there until you actuate the button, which alters the magnetic field, and allows gravity to move the spike. The benefit of this is that you can display it on a desk in both the in or out position, and the magnets hold the spike in place. I've attached a video showing how it works. Machine-grade oil lubricates the mechanism.

Further per eBay and Comic Con rules, this cannot be used as a stabbing weapon--a stabbing motion will overcome the magnetic hold on the spike in the out position, and returns the spike into the body (which can create a pretty cool effect, like the spike going into a neck).

Made in the USA. And you may return it if you're not happy.

If you'd like a free upgrade to Priority shipping (and are in the continental USA), buy my other listing of this item, same price, eBay item number 326112308256. I don't include it by default on this listing because a far-away Alaska, Hawaii or international buyer would be too expensive for me. That's why default shipping here is USPS Ground, at $8.
