On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique map "DENBIGH Comitatus pars Olim Ordovicum." A very attractive and detailed early 17th Century map of Denbighshire.  Offered with later hand colouring.

DATE PRINTED: 1610 or 1637 editions from the plate first published in 1607.  The absence of text on the back indicates this is not from the 1607 edition.  Denbigh was never engraved with a plate number so the 1610 and 1637 issues are identical.  Noted in pencil as being from the 1637 edition.

SIZE: The printed area is approximately 32.5 x 27 cm (12.75 x 10.75 inches), plus good margins and a centre fold as issued.

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by William Kip based on the earlier Saxton maps. Kip was a Goldsmith and engraver, especially of maps.

PROVENANCE: Produced for the 1607 edition of William Camden’s “Britannia”.  William Camden (2 May 1551 – 9 November 1623) was an English antiquarian, historian, topographer, and herald, best known as author of Britannia, the first chorographical survey of the islands of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Annales, the first detailed historical account of the reign of Elizabeth I of England.  The 1607 latin edition of Britannia included for the first time a full set of English county maps, based on the surveys of Christopher Saxton and John Norden, and engraved by William Kip and William Hole (who also engraved the fine frontispiece).  The maps would be reprinted in the English editions of the Britannia, 1610 and 1637.

TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on laid paper.
