Florence painted her life. Born in Indiana, she studied under William Forsyth at Herron Art School. She then taught art at Arsenal Technical High School. She lived in NYC from 1930-1938, where this painting was done. While in NY, she attended Grand Central Art School and studied under George Pearse Ennis. She then attended the Art Students League, where she served on the Board of Control. She exhibited at Argent Gallery, Hoosier Salon, Herron, Art Students League, and many other places. She lived and traveled many places around the world and painted her surroundings.

This painting has great depth. The evening sky and lighted windows will brighten and fade with the amount of light filtering through your home. See all photos.

Florence Smithburn passed away in 1989.  Cincinnati Art Gallery then presented a show of her work at the Indianapolis Athletic Club, which is when I purchased this painting. Florence requested that the people of her home state be offered her work first. It is estate signed in the lower right. There is a color brochure that was printed for the show. It tells a story of her life and contains photographs of 40 of her paintings. It will be included with the painting.

She liked simple frames. This period frame appears to be birch. It has scratches and nicks. The painting itself is in great original condition.
