Up for Buy it Now or Best Offer, an extremely rare, original, framed c. 1795 (1795 - 1811), antique color tinted engraving map of the State of Connecticut, from Carey's American Edition of Guthries Geography Improved. Engraving by Amos Doolittle. Framed and matted map comes with a certificate of authenticity from the framer, The Village Paint Shop, from Lake Forest, Illinois, labeling it an early 19th century map, and it very well may be, as Mathew Carey used the same 1795 map in subsequent editions of the Atlas, published intermittently from 1795 - 1811. The full title is Connecticut From the best Authorities, Delineated & Engraved by A. Doolittle, N. Haven. Engraved for Carey's American Edition of Guthries Geography improved by J.T. Scott. Frame measures approx 22.75” x 20.25” x .5” and sight approx. 15.75” x 13” Just under 5 lbs without packaging. A genuine piece of American and Connecticut history!


This was published in Carey's American Atlas. Philadelphia, Engraved For and Published By, Mathew Carey, No. 118, Market Street. In 1795, a plain version cost $5, whereas the color tinted version cost $6. By 1811, they cost $10 and $12 respectively. This map was part of the first atlas of America, printed in the United States of America. These maps were also published in Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography (1795) and most of the maps say "engraved for Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography improved."


For conditions, review photos closely, some photos will have glare. Framed map has not been removed from frame / matting. Conditions appear as is. Frame has some chipped corners, but solid, and map is under glass. Glass has not been cleaned in my possession. Unknown if glass offers UV protection. Aside from the notarized certificate of authenticity being moved from the sleeve on back for examination, nothing has been opened or disturbed.
