The Eljer Flushing Valve

The Eljer Company
Newark, N.J.
c. 1906

Extremely scarce brochure or leaflet advertising The Eljer Flushing Valve, manufactured by The Eljer Company during their brief period at 67 Hamilton Street, Newark, N.J., from 1905 to 1907.
The Elger Company was founded in February 1904 in San Francisco, California, by Raymond Elmer Crane and his cousin, Oscar Jerome Backus, the latter being the inventor of the revolutionary Eljer Flushing Valve, which as the leaflet notes: "contains no pistons, cup leathers, or other close working parts that cause friction. For this reason it is not affected by corrosion nor gritty and dirty water. This is a very important advantage over any other flushing valve."
The success of the flushing valve was so great that the firm opened up an Eastern branch by November 1904, located at 81 Fulton Street, in New York City, while maintaining their factory in San Francisco. But by April 1905, thanks to ever increasing demand, they moved both the New York office and San Francisco factory to 67 Hamilton Street, in Newark, New Jersey, the address provided in this advertisement [The Plumbers Trade Journal, November 1, 1904, p. 487, May 15, 1905, p. 556].
Once again, however, the company expanded by April 1907 with the purchase of a huge manufacturing plant in Cameron, West Virginia [Domestic Engineering, volume 39, #3, p. 73]. Apparently, they moved their entire operation around that time, as the Eljer Company was not listed in the 1908 Newark Directory.

[4] p.; 23 cm. (9 inches).Brochure or leaflet with glossy, stiffened paper, with illustration on the first page of a toilet with the Eljer Flushing Valve.
The leaflet also notes that "This Company is protected by five U.S. Patent Applications, two allowed and three now pending. All infringements will be vigorously prosecuted."

The brochure or leaflet is in Good Plus Condition: pages intact, no chips; has three horizontal folding creases, one with very tiny tear; some wear upper right corner of front page; back page lightly soiled. Very Scarce!
