Peter Green’s 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard

Replacing Eric Clapton in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1966, Peter Green was looking for a new guitar when he walked into Selmer’s music store and what he walked out with is the 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard shown here. Peter’s recording career was launched in 1967 with A Hard Road, where his blues-rock style and the sound of his Les Paul Standard can be heard distinctively on The Supernatural. Leaving the Bluesbreakers later that year with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie to form his own band, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac,  he quickly developed as a writer and contributed many successful original compositions including the singles Black Magic Woman, Albatross, Man of the World, Oh Well Pt.1 and The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown). Many guitarists have tried to recreate the Peter Green sound but just how it was created remained a mystery for many years until the guitar was stripped and inspected to find that the tone,  revered by many musicians was created by out of phase magnets inside the neck pickup. By the early 1970’s Peter’s health was suffering and this holy grail of Les Paul’s was sold to Gary Moore who used it to full effect showcasing his blues-soaked solo on Parisienne Walkways which quickly became Gary’s signature song.
