African Jewelry Paper Beads Necklace Kenya Fair Trade

Glossy Paper and Glass Bead Necklace

Novel, beautiful and recycled, it can't get any better than that! This necklace is made from beads of glossy paper from old calendars and brochures, with glass seed beads interspersed. Varnished to a high gloss, each paper bead is unique.

The paper is cut in long triangles and rolled to form the beads--wide short strips for narrow beads and long thin strips for fat beads.

The necklace measures 69 inches in length. Wear it long, bohemian style or wrap it around and wear in 2 strands. The necklace does not have a clasp. Comes with the 4-sided Fair Trade card as pictured.

No two are alike!

Meet the Artisans

TEMAK, the Teenage Mothers and Girls Association of Kenya trains young women in life skills necessary to support themselves and their families. One of the any skills taught is craft-making. From readily available materials, such as paper from magazines, tin from cans and wire from car engines, the artists make fun recycled jewelry. The young women also weave products and learn tie-dying and batiking. In addition, the organization opens international markets to other artisans in the town of Kisumu who previously relied on the tourists visiting Lake Victoria.

Fair Trade means that artisans are paid a fair price in advance for their products and work in safe working conditions. It provides the framework for empowering the disadvantaged of the world to make a fair living and provide for themselves and their families.
