Philips Lumea: the future of hair removal

The Philips Lumea IPL hair removal system is a revolutionary device that enables you to be free from unwanted hair and enjoy smooth skin every day. Philips Lumea uses gentle pulses of light to stimulate the hair root into a resting phase. Hair sheds naturally and regrowth is inhibited. Using Philips Lumea every two weeks on your underarms and bikini area, and every four weeks on your legs, will keep your skin smooth and hair-free day in, day out.

If you would like the gift of everlasting smoothness, add Philips Lumea to your Wish List today.

Philips Lumea works with an innovative light-based technology called intense pulsed light (IPL), derived from technology used in professional beauty salons for hair removal. You can now use this innovative technology in the comfort of your home. It’s an easy-to-use, hand-held device that applies gentle pulses of light to the hair root, causing hair to shed naturally and hair regrowth to be inhibited, achieving the result of everlasting smoothness.

"In my practice, patients are always requesting a more effective solution for hair removal. Philips Lumea is an innovative, hand-held hair removal solution. It allows women to safely and effectively prevent hair regrowth in the comfort of their own home." (Vic A Narurkar, US Cosmetic Dermatologist)

    How does Philips Lumea work?

Gentle pulses of light are applied directly to the hair. The melanin in the hair and hair root absorbs the light pulses. This process results in the follicle going into a resting phase. The hair sheds naturally and regrowth is inhibited. A simple and gentle treatment once every two to four weeks will prevent hair roots from becoming active again and prevent new hair from growing back.
    Three phases of hair growth

To properly understand how intense pulsed light works, you first need to understand the three hair growth phases.
    Active phase:
The hair begins its growth from the root, and gradually extends further above the skin. In this phase, the substance melanin (which gives hair its colour) is at its highest. The more melanin in the hair root the darker the colour of the hair. The Philips Lumea SC2001/00's intense pulsed light (IPL) technology works best on dark hair as it attaches itself to the pigment.

    Regression phase:
Hair stops growing and the root starts to shrink in preparation to shed the hair.

    Resting phase:
The old hair detaches from the root and is slowly forced out by the new hair, which is growing underneath. The root remains at rest until the body tells it to re-enter the active phase.
How does Philips Lumea prevent hair growth?

The Philips Lumea SC2001/00 intense pulsed light (IPL) works by heating up the hair and the root beneath the skin, using gentle pulses of light absorbed by the hair’s melanin. An internal optical filter ensures no UV light reaches the skin and leaves it unharmed. This light energy stimulates the hair root to go into a resting phase. In the following days the hair will shed naturally and hair growth is inhibited. It may take several weeks before the root becomes active again to grow a new hair. Used every two weeks you will enjoy the confidence of silky smooth skin forever.

Philips Lumea works even on sensitive body areas

Philips Lumea has been developed in close cooperation with leading dermatologists with five adjustable light intensity settings for a safe, effective and gentle treatment, even on sensitive areas.

    Five steps to everlasting smoothness:

    Pre-shave the treatment area

Pre-shave the treatment area to ensure the light energy is channelled in the most efficient way to the follicle. This is only required for the first few treatments.

    Select the correct light intensity

Consult the skin and hair type matrix and select the light intensity suitable for your skin tone and body hair color.

Apply pulses of light to the hair

Apply gentle pulses of light to the hair. The light produces heat in the hair, which is transferred to the hair follicle. This stimulates the hair follicle to go into a resting phase.

    Effective hair regrowth prevention

As a consequence, the hair sheds naturally and hair regrowth is inhibited.

Repeat the treatment every two to four weeks

To prevent hairs from growing back, the treatment must be repeated every two weeks (or every month for legs) which will progressively reduce hair regrowth to a minimum.

    Average treatment time

    Underarms: Two minutes per underarm
Bikini line: Two minutes per side
    Entire bikini area: Eight minutes
    One lower leg: 15 minutes
    One full leg: 30 minutes

    Rechargeable battery

With quick charge functionality (full charge in 1 ½ hours, 80% charge in one hour). Because the appliance runs on rechargeable batteries, it is portable and can be used anywhere. The Philips Lumea SC2001/00 intense pulsed light (IPL) hair removal system has the following technical features.

Suitable skin and hair types for Philips Lumea

Philips Lumea works effectively on (naturally) dark-blonde, brown and black hair. It is NOT suitable for (naturally) red, grey and light blonde hair or for very dark skin types (skin type VI). Please consult the table below to determine which light intensities are most suitable for your skin and body hair colour and to check if this method is suitable for you at all (if it is not, this is indicated
with an x in the table to the right).

    Survey 2009

When tested*, 82% of women preferred Philips Lumea’s IPL hair removal system to conventional methods, including waxing, shaving and epilation. *Based on 315 Lumea users in Spain (MetrixLab, 2009)
Can I expect light-based hair removal results to last forever?

Neither professional nor at-home light-based hair removal treatments can deliver permanent hair removal. Due to the hair growth cycle, light-based treatments are usually done in a series of sessions. Hairs that may have been dormant during your previous treatment may now be in the growth phase. With both professional and at-home treatments, hairs usually reappear after time, typically with a reduced amount or finer version. For professional treatment, maintenance sessions once or twice a year are often recommended. Philips Lumea uses a lower intensity than the professional treatments, but using it more regularly gives you breakthrough results at home.

Some competitors claim ‘permanent hair reduction’. According to the FDA (Richard Felten, FDA regulator responsible for light-based epilation) "Permanent hair reduction is defined as the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing after a treatment regime. Permanent hair reduction does not necessarily imply the elimination of all hairs in the treatment area." Unfortunately, most consumers mistake ‘permanent hair reduction’ (which can mean only 40% reduction, which would be an unsatisfactory result) for ‘permanent hair removal’, which is a myth.

    Important safety advice

Unfortunately, Philips Lumea is not designed for everyone. If any of the following is true for you, then this appliance is not suitable for you to use.
If your natural hair colour in the treatment areas is light blonde, white, grey or red.
If you are of skin type VI (you rarely or never get sunburnt and you tan very darkly). In this case you run a high risk of developing skin reactions such as strong redness, burns or discolouration when you use Philips Lumea.
Philips Lumea is not suitable for usage by men.
Philips Lumea is not suitable for use on the face.
There are medications and health conditions that may lead to adverse reactions when you use Philips Lumea. We would advise you to visit www.philips.co.uk/lumea to read full safety information.
You can also find full information on using Philips Lumea before and after tanning at www.philips.co.uk/lumea

Philips Lumea is a cost-effective alternative to salon treatments

"The cost of laser hair removal depends on several factors including the area to be treated, the amount of hair growth on the area, the number of treatments needed, the type of laser used, the individual physician or practitioner, and your geographic location. Prices vary widely from clinic to clinic. Laser hair removal need an average of four to six sessions for a final result of approximately 80% hair reduction in the specified area."
