THE PLATE BLOCK : depicts a Turkish engineer and military train at Beer-Sheva station, and a monument to Turkish soldiers, set against a "1915"* background.
* This is the first of four stamps that Israel will issue - ONE EACH YEAR - to commemorate local events of the Great War in Israel from 1915, 1916, 1917, and 1918.
BRIEF HISTORY : At the beginning of World War One, the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) allied itself with Germany against the triumverate of Great Britain, France and Russia. Their objective was to expand their sphere of influence throughout the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and beyond. The Imperial German Navy fleet already had use of Constantinople, and had enjoyed some successes in the War up to that point.
Helped by their German allies, the Ottoman army made an unsuccessful attack was on the British-held Suez Canal in early 1915. Thousands of local people were conscripted into cutting down forests of trees for construction of tracks for a military railway south through Israel towards the Sinai, ending at Beer-Sheva. This was Turkey's most significant achievement in Israel in 1915. Beer-Sheva became the Turkish army's logistics headquarters, and thousands of soldiers and much war materiel was safely transported by this means.
The railway station at Beer-Sheva was inaugurated in October 1915. The further extension of tracks into the Sinai was halted in May 1916, when British troops advanced from Egypt.
