BSA Goldstar DBD34

The origin of the name Gold Star goes back to 1937 when Wal Handley lapped the Brooklands race track at over 100 mph on an M23 Empire Star.

The BMCRC awarded a lapel badge in the form of a gold star surrounding the figure 100 to any rider who lapped the Brooklands concrete bowl at over 100mph whilst competing in one of their club races.

Wal Handley achieved this and in recognition BSA released their new 500cc sports single as the Gold Star.

Post-war development resulted in domination of the Clubmans TT races and the 1956 release of the most popular model, the 499cc DBD34 Clubman Gold Star, but the specialised specification eventually made it uneconomical to produce and the Gold Star ceased production in 1963.
