Jimi Hendrix’s Guitars

Played throughout 1967 and 1968, Jimi used nail polish to create the custom psychedelic finish on his 1967 Gibson Flying V.
This 1968 Olympic White Fender Stratocaster became one of Jimi’s favourites and was used at The Woodstock Music & Art Fair, held in August 1969 which is considered the most important rock concert ever held, demonstrating the counter culture and hippie culture of the 1960’s. The highlight of Jimi’s appearance was a solo performance of The Star-Spangled Banner played as part of a medley lasting over half an hour including Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Purple Haze and an unaccompanied improvisation lasting nearly five minutes.
The Monterey International Pop Festival was a three-day event held in 1967’s Summer of Love and was the first widely promoted and heavily attended rock festival. Hardly anyone in America had heard of Jimi before his performance but when he made his exit, he left behind far more than the smashed bits of his burnt Stratocaster. Ending his performance with Wild Thing, Hendrix knelt down,  laid his guitar on the stage, poured lighter fluid over it and set it alight. He then smashed it into the stage before throwing the broken remains into the audience.
Known widely for playing Fender Stratocasters, Jimi played a few Gibson’s including this 1967 Gibson SG Custom. Appearing as a guest on American TV’s The Dick Cavett Show on September 9th 1969, Jimi used this guitar to perform Izabella and notably the premiere of Machine Gun.
In 1967 Jimi set a guitar alight for the first time on his European tour on 31 March at London’s Finsbury Park Astoria. Setting this 1965 Fender Stratocaster on fire didn’t go exactly to plan as Jimi received burns to his hands.

The illustration of these famous guitars is original and has been produced by George Morgan following extensive research.
