Jimi Hendrix’s burnt Astoria Stratocaster

On the first night of a 24-date European tour Jimi set his guitar alight for the first time.
Jimi, his manager Chas Chandler and music journalist Keith Altham had met up before the tour’s first show on 31 March 1967 at London’s Finsbury Park Astoria, when they agreed Jimi should play Fire, then actually set his guitar ablaze.  
They concocted a stunt to ensure Jimi’s performance wouldn’t be forgotten, so after the Experience concluded their opening set with Fire, Jimi put down his guitar by the amplifiers and distracted the audience by walking back to the front of the stage while Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding continued to play. While the crowd were watching Jimi,  Chas poured lighter fluid over the Stratocaster then Jimi returned to the guitar, knelt down and set it alight. The stunt didn’t go exactly to plan and resulted in Jimi being hospitalised with burns to his hands. Jimi didn’t set any more guitars alight on that tour although he repeated the stunt once more during the Monterey International Pop Festival.
In 2008 following a long period in storage the scorched remains of Jimi’s 1965 Fender Stratocaster sold at auction for $575,000 (£280,000).
