Francis Rossi’s Fender Telecaster

This 1957 Fender Telecaster was originally finished in sunburst when purchased second-hand by Francis for £70 in 1968, but he wanted a
natural wood finish so it wasn’t long before he rubbed down the body. Then deciding he wanted to paint it black. However, the black finish was unsuccessful so the front and back were rubbed down again. This time refinishing the front with green fence paint, Francis hurriedly reassembled it to play a gig and it has remained this way and continues to be used as his main guitar. Major hardware changes were made over the years including installation of three lace sensor pickups which work in a Stratocaster
configuration with 5-way switching, a G&L bridge and addition of the 22nd fret.
Strangely the hole in the body remains a mystery. Maybe it was drilled for the guitar lead to be threaded back through but Francis suggests it was so the guitar could be secured with a bicycle lock.
