Nikon SP 35mm Rangefinder Camera+Nikkor-S.C 5cm f/1.4 - CLASSIC FILM PHOTOGRAPHY

You are viewing a used Nikon SP 35mm Rangefinder Camera with Nikkor-S.C 5cm (50mm) f/1.4 lens in excellent mechanical and optical condition. Carrying the marks of normal use in the matte chrome finish and black body paint, the body covering is in superior condition. It is fully adhered to the body and shows no signs of age, drying or cracking. The rangefinder window is bright and clear even in standard room light. The Nippon Kogaku NIKKOR-S lens is in remarkable condition. The optics are clear and clean with no sign of fog or fungus. The front element surface shows a couple of minor marks that won’t affect image quality. Focus and aperture setting is smooth and sure and the infinity locks functions as designed.

Fully functional, this camera is a testimony to the art of fine design and solid manufacturing principles beyond almost anything we see today. Released in September 1957, the Nikon SP was the last of Nikon’s rangefinder line of 35mm cameras. Discontinued in 1965, a total of 22,348 cameras were manufactured. This one’s serial number, 6209840, indicates it to be a mid-production build (Serial numbers began at 6200001 and 6232150 is the highest recorded serial number). The SP was in the design stage along with the Nikon F, the first professional 35mm SLR, and shares much in common with it including a large number of internal parts.

Nikon SP Rangefinder Firsts:

  • First 35mm rangefinder camera with SIX built-in frame-lines (It took Leica 23 years to equal this with the M4P in 1980).
  • First Japanese camera to have a single, non-rotating shutter speed dial.
  • First to have a reliable, professional quality motor drive.
  • First (only?) camera to have a powered bright-line illuminator.
  • First 35mm camera with titanium shutter curtain.
  • Widest range of lenses offered (during it’s time of manufacture) from 21mm f/4 to 1000mm f/6.3.
  • First rangefinder system to offer a macro lens, the 50mm f/3.5.
