In Rome, during the Second World War, three escaped, Allied POWs ---  a British major; a Soviet sergeant; and an American lieutenant --- try to avoid recapture and join their far-off units. An Italian woman, Esperia Belli, agrees to give them shelter. She's aware that, in spite of Italy's efforts to break with their German allies, there are some Italians who are fascist sympathizers and who would gladly denounce her to the city's German occupiers. Esperia hopes to get in touch with the Resistance and help the POWs get to safety. But until then, the men are stuck in her attic.
