This sale is for a large size (huge) vintage hardback LIMITED FIRST EDITION entitled “The Bird Paintings of C. G. Finch-Davies,” Southern Africa’s finest bird artist, with an Introduction by Dr. Alan Kemp, a Foreword by Dr. C. K. Brain, Director, Transvaal Museum, and beautifully illustrated with over 100 COLOUR plates, mostly FULL PAGE, including a frontispiece depicting Narina Trogon – Apaloderma Narina – (adult male and female), numerous vintage photographic and other illustrations and a map of Southern Africa showing the places visited by Finch-Davies, which are mentioned in the text, and the routes he travelled while soldiering in the region.


 


It was published by Winchester Press, of Johannesburg, South Africa, appears to be the 1984 (date of copyright) FIRST EDITION and is number 2307 of a LIMITED EDITION of 5026 copies.

The book measures 14.75 inches x 11.4 inches x 1.3 inches (a little bigger in its slipcase) and has 312 pages (including illustrations). 


 


The illustration mounted on the slipcase and binding is taken from the artist’s thirtieth, and last, sketchbook in the possession of the British Museum (Natural History), London.


 


The book is in very good internally clean and neat condition, with a little wear/fading to the spine of the cloth hardback cover.  The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages.  There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book.  The cloth slipcase is in very good condition for its age, with minor wear.
